LOTS BREWING is a comedy-drama that strikes a particular and appealing light tone that makes it breezy to read and appealing for TV. A big part of that comes from the characters and the way they talk and interact with one another. The humor doesn’t come from Tex, Jim, or Meghan being the butt of the joke, but instead the characters are always cracking jokes and trying to make each other laugh, the way actual friends do. The conversations are natural and flow easily between the scenes and the different conflicts that arise. The dialogue is a big part of what works best in this pilot and helps it stand out.

I read the whole thing in one sitting… I wanted to know where things were going to go! I could picture the characters in my mind! I was surprised and tickled by the jabs / bon mots / jokes! I flatter myself to think that I have been somewhat thoughtful over my 50ish years of media consumption, enough so to recognize whether something is special or not, and I think this is.

The premise is unique. No other major TV show springs to mind that centers around the formation of a craft brewery. The North Carolina setting has the potential to appeal to people in a state that’s experiencing an economic and demographic renaissance, but which has mostly been overlooked by Hollywood. In terms of the Key Demographic, the show will prove relatable, what with its portrayal of college students and the trendy craft beer scene. Jim and Tex have a bro-dynamic that will appeal to young men, while Meghan has an interesting arc that will attract female viewers.

The main cast of characters are all distinct and defined. Jim is an ambitious striver, but with real sensitivity; Tex is a passionate person who hides behind a facade of slobbishness; Meghan is brilliant, but indecisive. And Thomas and Jillian are products of a different generation and tax bracket that can’t help but butt heads with one another. This cast forms a stellar basis for a comedy drama series.
