The Bigger Picture

For any series to break through the insane amount of clutter and really grab an audience’s attention, it absolutely must have a unique central premise, which immediately intrigues. But capturing someone’s initial notice is just the very beginning of the long road a new show has to travel in order to earn a viewer’s ongoing attention, loyalty, and (vocal) support.

Beyond that, to truly resonate with viewers, a program must be timely and socially relevant, and to be commercial impactful, a program must have the “legs” required to warrant continual episodes. Since my fictional work’s concept is focused on a long-lasting, wildly popular trend across the entire country, and because it is informed by the reality of life as a small business owner, which due to its nature is never-ending, LOTS BREWING absolutely meets these requirements.

An Instant, Passionate Fan Base

Perhaps the best way to maximize your chances of doing the above is to provide a window into a world that is compelling, but which is also widely unknown. It’s no accident, therefore, that the subject matter of LOTS BREWING is hugely appealing to the exceedingly passionate (and ever-growing) community of beer enthusiasts. These devotees would make for an instant audience that would quickly evolve into a rabid fanbase, which would then absolutely go out of its way to tell friends and family to watch.

Filmed Where It Is Set, And It Shows

Ever notice how most television shows feel like they take place in Anytown, U.S.A. and so could be filmed anywhere? One might wonder why that is. I did, and it occurred to me there’s actually a very simple reason, which is that they are most always filmed somewhere other than where they are supposed set, so it’s a practicality that hardly any scenes are filmed outside! It makes sense though, if they filmed Friends outside of the coffee shop or their apartments you’d end up with viewers wondering why there were no Yellow Cabs but bunches of palm trees in Manhattan. Or why was it that we rarely saw any of the staffers of County General Hospital outside the building where they worked? Well, perhaps because it rarely snows in Southern California.

Nestled in the mountains of North Carolina, Asheville is a gem of a city. LOTS BREWING will feature the area accordingly, showing off the gorgeous countryside and vibrant downtown. Included in the many outdoor scenes will be disc golf, the sport our brewing roommates play avidly, but also hiking, mountain biking, rafting/tubing, skiing, and just being outside in the amazing mountain surroundings in general.

Purposefully Different For A Different Purpose
In closing, I would say I also took note of the observation that television shows of note are often the result of mashing up two genres which haven’t previously been combined. For example, as an account of the inner workings of a hospital,  ER (earnings of $3B+ during its 15-season run) was not unique, having followed in the footsteps of shows like ST. ELSEWHERE and others, but unlike any of those mundane depictions of the medical world, it instead featured the frenetic activity of the emergency room, making it more like a typical action show.

For LOTS BREWING to be a different sort of show, it will take a page out of the wildly successful playbook of American version of THE OFFICE and be filmed in a pseudo-documentary style. Because the show is about the founding of a brewery and not simply the day to day affairs of running an established business, the actual construction process and all the decisions that go into the creation of the physical structure will be documented. This “meta” approach will apply to all things LOTS BREWING and so we will watch an actual brand be born.

A Show About The Foundation Of An Actual Small Business
That’s right, when the Season One concludes and there is a building to house The Land Of The Sky Brewing Company, there will be an actual new brewery and taproom in Asheville for locals and visitors to frequent, a small business that doubles as a television set! In fact, on certain days and times visitors will serve as extras on the show as scenes in and around the facility are shot. Pretty cool, right?

The concept here is that the show will drive people to want to try the beer and potentially visit Asheville to see all the great things shown for themselves, and the beer, if it is as good as intended (we’ve contracted an award-winning local brewer to craft our line of original LOTS brews), then it ought to bring attention to the show detailing its creation. A true win/win scenario, to be sure!
